What will you need to get started on your adventures in Fires of Athelen?

All you need to get started is a copy of the Players Companion containing all the rules and information players need to get themselves started and to shape and develop their characters going forward and the Game Masters Companion. Which contains all those extra bits the Games Master needs to help them shape the world and tell the story you all take part in. Add to these some polyhedral dice, a group of friends to sit around a table with and share laughs and adventures. Or even remotely via one of the many excellent online platforms that allow us all to connect and bring role-players together from all across the world.

With that all you need do is strengthen your resolve and arm yourself with the greatest weapon of all the limitless power of your imagination and you're good to go.

Is Fires of Athelen easy to learn?

Relatively yes, like any TTRPG getting to know a new system can be daunting, but FoA's Companions are designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate as possible. A lot of time was spent developing rules that made sense and though FoA is a high fantasy TTRPG it's designed to make sense in a realistic way. Though we have Magi that can throw balls of fire around the mechanics governing it all are reasonably logical. 

The Games Masters Companion does contain some advanced rules and classes such as FoA's Sorcery System that allows players and GM's to work together to quite literally make magic at the table top. Using their imagination to create truly unique magical affects in an easy to learn and creative environment.

Do I need to be an experienced role-player to learn how to play Fires of Athelen?

Not at all, FoA was designed to be as user friendly and accessible to as many people as possible. Anyone with experience in other TTRPG's will find FoA familiar and comfortable. After all the genre is some 40 years all now and like many new games entering the genre the experiences of the developers having played numerous games over the past decades have help shape Fires of Athelen into the system it is today. Learning lessons from those that came before and attempting to take those learning and bring it all together into a system that will bring countless hours of fun and joy to those who play it. Races

Athelen is home to many remarkable and wondrous races whose history span the ages of the world. Below are details of the basic character races. The Players Companion contains a number of other races and the Games Masters Companion contains a number of races that allow Games Masters to create rich and unique NPC's, as well as being their as an option for use as player races.

 

Classes

As well as having a culturally diverse selection of races all of whom has history woven into the fabric of Athelen. Similarly Fires of Athelen possess a diverse and immersive selection of classes. As well as optional monstrous classes and advanced character classes that can be found in the Games Masters Companion. Why have four rule books?

Fires of Athelen is an expansive game system with a wide variety of races, classes, skills, talent and spells etc that all have their own unique feel and style of play. Coupled with this diversity and providing players with their own dedicated companion we have all the additional rules and tool kits we're providing in The Game Master's Companion. To get started these two companions are all you need. To compliment them and to aid Game Masters we have the Campaign Guide that helps to introduce and immerse players and GM's alike in the FoA Universe. Introducing you to the world of Athelen and its setting. Finally The Monstrous Encyclopaedia adds further content and flavour allowing GM's access to even more tool kits to help create their own monsters with as well as lore and base stats for the myriad of monstrous entities that lurk in the shadows of the FoA universe.

How can I tell if Fires of Athelen is my kind of game without going to the expense of buying all those books?

As part of Fires of Athelen's launch we're also launching our very own Twitch Show with the oh so original title of 'Fires of Athelen - A Shadow Awakens'. Like most of the world at the moment due to the impact of the Corona Virus, Fires of Athelen's timeline stalled somewhat. But like any good party of adventurers we're adapting and overcoming the obstacles and traps this adventure has put in our way and we hope to be able to go live very soon. What inspired you to design your own TTRPG?

In all honesty? Fires of Athelen is a One-Shot that has gotten way out of control. Like pretty much all independent game developers we at Fires of Athelen are avid roleplayers ourselves. Originally FoA started off as a one-shot when our lead developers rpg group found itself without a GM. He had a game world floating around inside his head and volunteered to run a one-shot. The system they were using didn't fit with his imagining of his world though, so as the one-shot turned into a mini-adventure, that turned into a full blown campaign he set about writing a set of rules that would allow him to bring the dark gritty realism of that world to his friends adventures. Two years, 4 books and nigh on a million words later and some bright spark telling him 'This is pretty good why don't you try and produce it' that odyssey is nearing its conclusion. And we have what has become a labour of love that is the Fires of Athelen - Tabletop Roleplaying Game.

What drives the creative process of Fires of Athelen?

At the heart of FoA there are a number of core values and tenants that help drive our developmental processes.

1) Empowerment: Many of the systemic features within FoA are designed specifically to empower players and game masters alike. FoA's enhanced character creation and development allows players the freedom to develop their character in their own image. Where some ttrpg's restrict your character development within a strict frameworks. In FoA we offer you much greater scope for developing your character as you see fit. For GM's rather than providing you with rigid frameworks we want to empower you to be creative providing you with the tools to unlock your imagination and breath life and colour into your world. FoA's Class Design tool kit gives you all you need for making your own bespoke player or monstrous classes. The superbly titled 'Build a Better Demon Wizard' gives GM's everything they need to easily create a myriad of entertaining and scary Fallen Infernal creatures. Wherein you can quite literally take the stats for any creature you've created pop it into the Wizard and out pops a soul devouring Fallen. The variety of options within the Build a Better Demon Wizard is as such you really can build encounters wherein no two Fallen (Demons) are alike. In doing so you're quickly and easily able to create truly diverse encounters to entertain your players with.

2) Creative License: At FoA we recognise that GM's and Players alike have a need to express themselves and each and everyone of us has our own creative inspirations and sparks. As such FoA looks to feed those creative juices as much as possible. The Game Masters Companion contains numerous tools for the GM to create everything from Magic Items, Monstrous Classes and Races to powerful soul devouring Infernal's. FoA's adventures are written in such a manner so as not to be prescriptive, with monster A being in room 12 or the secret door to the thieves guild tunnels always being behind the third cask of ale in the cellar. Because that's where the adventure module says they are. FoA Adventures are written more along the lines of a storyboard for a play or film. Giving GM's the background and general plot, suggesting various plot arcs they can explore, naming npc's and local landmarks but not saturating it with detail. In doing so allowing the GM to create the adventure themselves using the plot hooks and various plot devices themselves. As such no two GM's are ever going to run the same adventure. You can play the same adventure over and over if you wish and you'll never likely find Monster A in Room 12 twice. FoA is as much a story telling system as it is anything else. To us the concept of Roleplaying is supposed to be a form of interactive story telling and we've strive to make FoA in that image allowing players and GM's alike to have the creative license to tell their own tales and not regurgitate ours. Nothing epitomises this in FoA more so than FoA's Sorcery system wherein GM's and players like can literally create magic at the tabletop no longer confined by rigid rules and definitions.

3) Immersion: In FoA literally everything we do is to help GM's and Players alike get drawn into FoA and the FoA Universe. To draw you into the scenes your GM has created to get everyone around the table invested in what's going on. From the unique and immerse nature of the player classes that all very much belong to world of Athelen. To FoA's locational combat system and injury system, that adds a tactical and immersive edge to combat that allows GM's and Players alike in a systemic fashion to build what we call in FoA parlance as the 'Combative Narrative'. Rather than just swinging away or zapping monsters with spells and adding a bit of colour commentary. FoA's locational combat system allows players and GM's to tell the story of the battle in a real sense. FoA's expanded background system enables players to develop trade crafts that supplement their normal adventuring life. Adding yet another immersive layer to your character and much more all designed with one purpose to help make your adventures in the FoA Universe as colourful and meaningful as possible.

4) Last but not least... Fun: If it doesn't help make the whole FoA experience Fun! it doesn't make it past the editing room floor if you will. From the brutality of FoA's combat system that quite literally keeps players on the edge of their seats looking over their shoulders for the spectre of death. To the sense you're in control of your character and how they develop. FoA is there for you to have fun with. That after all is why we all love getting around a table and putting our characters fates in the hands of the Dice Gods. Because it's fun.
